When Our Efforts Come Up Empty
Sometimes we work hard, yet see nothing to show for it.
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.
John 21:3-6
The disciples knew how to fish. Many of them had done it their whole lives. Yet that night, after hours on the water, their nets were empty.
It must have felt frustrating. All the effort, all the waiting, and nothing came out of it.
Then a voice from the shore spoke to them. Jesus told them to cast the net on the other side of the boat. It sounded simple, almost too simple. Still, they listened.
And suddenly the nets were full.
This moment shows something many of us experience. We try our best. We follow what we know. Yet things do not move the way we expect. Results do not appear. Doors remain closed.
Sometimes the difference is not more effort. It is listening.
Jesus did not ask the disciples to sail somewhere new or change their profession. He simply guided them in a different direction. When they followed His word, the outcome changed.
In our own lives, we also face nights where our nets return empty. Work feels fruitless. Plans fail. Effort brings little reward. These moments can discourage us.
But the story reminds us that Jesus still stands on the shore of our lives. He sees what we are going through. His guidance may come through Scripture, prayer, or a quiet realization in the heart.
When we listen and trust Him, even small changes can open the way for something greater.
Think about an area of your life where you feel you have been trying hard but seeing little result. Could Jesus be inviting you to trust Him and try a different direction?
Lord Jesus,
You see the efforts we make and the struggles we face.
When our work feels fruitless, help us to listen for Your guidance.
Teach us to trust Your word even when we do not understand it at first.
Lead us to follow You with faith, knowing that You provide what we need.
Amen.
