But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
John 19:33–34
At the moment of His death, Jesus no longer spoke.
His teaching had ceased, His breath had stopped. Yet, through the piercing of His side, a final and wordless sermon was given, one that speaks straight to the heart.
John tells us that blood and water flowed out. This was no mere detail, it was a divine sign. The early Church Fathers saw in the blood a symbol of the Eucharist, and in the water, Baptism. In that moment, the Church was born from His side, just as Eve came from Adam’s.
But this isn’t only a grand theological image. It’s also personal.
Jesus didn’t just die for us. He opened Himself to us. Even in death, He gave. His heart was pierced, and from it flowed mercy, cleansing, and life.
When we feel dry in our faith, ashamed of our sins, or afraid to draw near, we can look to the side of Christ. We don’t need to be perfect to approach Him. He has already poured Himself out. There is nothing left to fear—only love that flows freely, forever.
What part of your life needs healing or cleansing? How might Jesus be inviting you to receive the grace flowing from His pierced heart?
Jesus, Your side was pierced so that nothing would remain hidden from us, not even Your heart.
Pour out Your mercy upon me.
Wash me, renew me, and draw me into the mystery of Your love.
Amen.
