More Than Bread
Learning to notice what quietly shapes our hearts
The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
Mark 8:14-15
We can almost feel the tension in that boat. The disciples realize they forgot the bread. Only one loaf. Hunger, worry, practical concerns start to fill the space. And right there, Jesus speaks about something deeper. Not bread, but leaven.
Leaven works quietly. It does not announce itself. It slowly spreads and changes everything it touches. Jesus warns them about the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod. Not their rules or power on the surface, but the inner attitudes behind them. Pride, fear, control, the need to appear right or strong.
We often do the same. We focus on what is missing. Enough time. Enough money. Enough answers. Our thoughts circle around these small loaves. Meanwhile, subtle habits and attitudes shape our hearts without us noticing. A bit of resentment. A habit of comparison. A quiet reliance on ourselves instead of trust.
Jesus does not scold them for forgetting the bread. He invites them to see beyond it. To trust that the One in the boat is already enough. To guard their hearts from influences that slowly pull them away from truth and humility.
The question is not how much bread we have. The question is what is shaping us from the inside.
What quiet influences might be shaping our thoughts or attitudes right now, and where is Jesus inviting us to become more aware?
Lord Jesus, help us to see beyond our immediate worries. Guard our hearts from what slowly leads us away from You, and teach us to trust that You are enough, even when we feel we lack. Amen.
