Mercy as a Daily Choice
Living the mercy we have already received
Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
Luke 6:36
Jesus speaks plainly. Mercy is not optional, and it is not reserved for special moments. It is meant to shape how we live, speak, and respond each day. We are called to mirror the mercy God shows us, a mercy that meets us in our weakness and does not turn away.
In daily life, mercy often looks small. It appears when we pause before reacting, when we choose understanding instead of blame, when we listen even though we feel tired or hurt. It is present when we forgive without keeping score, and when we stop replaying old failures in our minds, whether they belong to others or to ourselves.
Being merciful does not mean pretending that pain did not happen. It means refusing to let pain have the final word. God’s mercy restores dignity and opens space for growth. When we choose mercy, we allow grace to move through us, shaping our relationships and softening places that have grown hard over time.
Who might God be inviting us to treat with mercy today, including ourselves?
Father, you have been patient and generous with us. Help us to extend that same mercy in our daily lives. When judgment comes easily, remind us of your grace. Teach us to act with compassion and humility, trusting that your mercy has the power to heal. Amen.
